TOSHIBA DVD PLAYERS LEAD THE WAY IN PERFORMANCE, FEATURES AND FLEXIBILITY
Years of pioneering efforts in digital video disc technology will culminate
this Fall with the market introduction of two Toshiba DVD players -- the
high-performance Model SD-2006 and the state-of-the-art Model SD-3006.
Both models are designed to showcase all the extraordinary performance,
features and functions inherent in the revolutionary Toshiba DVD system.
According to Steve Nickerson, Toshiba VP of Video Marketing, the long-awaited
market introduction of Toshiba's DVD players is destined to re-energize
sales in the entire home theater category. Says Nickerson: "Never
before has a new home entertainment system held such promise for accelerating
sales within the entire consumer electronics industry. The synergy between
DVD and home theater -- particularly in large-screen SuperTUBE, projection
TV and audio components -- is especially significant. We believe that DVD
will fuel even greater interest in home theater and its related components."
DVD Means Home Theater Performance And Maximum Flexibility
The ultimate home theater source component, Toshiba DVD offers 133 minutes
of video playback on a single side of a 5-inch DVD disc (enough playback
time to accommodate 92% of all feature-length films). Video images are
reproduced with quality that exceeds laserdisc and VHS-- with astounding
color purity and resolution of 720 pixels per horizontal line. And DVD
offers powerful home theater sound, supporting 5.1-channel discrete Dolby
Digital Surround Sound, Dolby Pro Logic and high-fidelity stereo. Also,
because Toshiba DVD players feature full CD playback compatibility, they
are the ideal centerpiece of a total home entertainment experience.
Toshiba DVD players bring new levels of convenience and flexibility
to the home theater enthusiast. For instance, during playback of movies,
DVD discs have the capability of providing a choice of viewing options.
There's standard 4:3 pan-and-scan viewing -- the way most movies are displayed
from broadcast and tape sources. Or press a button on a Toshiba DVD player's
remote control and you can view the action the way the director intended
-- letterboxed for viewing on a big screen TV. There's even a special anamorphic
mode designed to provide full-screen high resolution pictures on today's
advanced widescreen (16:9) sets. Toshiba DVD players also have the capability
to carry soundtracks in eight different languages, plus up to 32 subtitle
languages.
And for even greater viewing flexibility, each new Toshiba DVD player
features a built-in parental control system. With a Toshiba DVD player,
a parent selects the ratings version to be viewed -- PG, PG-13, R or NC-17
-- and the player automatically blocks out movies that exceed ratings limit.
SD-3006: The Ultimate in DVD Quality
Distinguished by the inclusion of component video outputs, the SD-3006
is Toshiba's most advanced DVD player, designed especially for high-end
videophiles interested in optimal image quality and picture performance.
Video on every DVD disc is encoded in component video form, utilizing MPEG-2
digital image compression.
With "color-difference" outputs on the SD-3006, it is now
possible to route a component video signal directly to line scanning converters
(doublers, quadruplers, etc) and high-end video displays. By retrieving
the signal before it is converted to composite form, overall picture quality
is dramatically improved. Typical NTSC artifacts -- including dot crawl
and moire -- are completely eliminated, resulting in a low-noise, highly
detailed picture with astounding color purity. For high-resolution displays,
the SD-3006 is also equipped with S-Video outputs. Gold-plated outputs
are provided for maximum audio and video performance.
The SD-3006 boasts a fluorescent display of key performance functions
and options, including: elapsed time/remaining time; operating mode (DVD
or CD); title number and track number; availability of multi-camera angles;
A-B repeat status; play; and pause.
Accessing all these functions on the SD-3006 is fast and convenient
via an ergonomically designed universal remote control. Capable of operating
the DVD player plus a TV and cable box, this handsomely designed remote
offers a compass-type cursor key pad for easy menu navigation plus quick
access to basic player functions. Less frequently utilized keys -- including
a 10-button pad for direct chapter and frame access -- are conveniently
located under a sliding door on the remote.
SD-2006: High Performance/High Value
The high-performance Model SD-2006 brings Toshiba DVD quality to a more
affordable price point. Like the top-of-the-line SD-3006, the SD-2006 includes
a full range of high-performance features including advanced special effects
(frame advance, still frame, slow motion, pause, fast-forward and fast-reverse),
as well as a variety of repeat modes (title, chapter/track, A-B, and memory).
And for maximum flexibility in home theater system applications, the SD-2006
is equipped with S-Video, composite video and analog stereo audio outputs.
The SD-2006 features a fluorescent display of basic player operating
functions, and it boasts the same outstanding performance specifications
as Toshiba's top-of-the-line Model SD-3006.
Both new Toshiba DVD players feature identical easy-to-navigate on-screen
menu systems designed to control all key player functions -- including
Parental Control, subtitle and dialog language selection, and aspect-ratio
selection. A simple press on the remote control provides access to all
functions.
Concludes Toshiba's Nickerson: "With our first two players we
wanted to ensure that quality-conscious videophiles would immediately have
available to them players that fully demonstrate the maximum performance
of DVD. To that end, our DVD players represent the reference standard in
DVD quality. Every home theater enthusiast who wants to explore the true
performance potential of DVD owes it to himself to audition a Toshiba DVD
player."
The Toshiba SD-3006 and SD-2006 will be available in Fall '96 at suggested
retail prices of $699 and $599, respectively.
